MAN U – AWARD

We’ve selected 10 eye-catching strikes for you to pick from. Which of these efforts will get your vote at www.manutd.com/awards?1. Jesse Lingard v Leicester City, Wembley Stadium, 07/08/16

It’s fitting that a goal scored in this season’s curtain-raiser – August’s Community Shield triumph over Leicester City – should be the first to feature on our shortlist. Having fired United to FA Cup glory three months earlier, Lingard surged through the Foxes’ half, evading several tackles before running into the area and firing beyond Kasper Schmeichel to score another memorable goal at Wembley.

2. Juan Mata v Leicester City, Old Trafford, 24/09/16

A Goal of the Season shortlist wouldn’t be complete without an effort from Mata. The Spaniard’s strike in United’s home league win over Leicester was a classic team goal, as the eventual scorer played a pass to Paul Pogba and continued his run, received the ball from Lingard and fired a shot into the corner.

3. Paul Pogba v Swansea City, Liberty Stadium, 06/11/16

Pogba is no stranger to great goals and he scored in style when the Reds travelled to south Wales back in November. There were just 15 minutes on the clock when the ball was headed out to the edge of Swansea’s box, and Pogba produced a technically-perfect volley which gave the goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski no chance of saving it as it arrowed into the top corner.

4. Henrikh Mkhitaryan v Zorya Luhansk, Chornomorets Stadium, 08/12/16

Next on our chronological list is Mkhitaryan’s calm finish during United’s 2-0 Europa League win against Zorya Luhansk in December. On a chilly night in Odessa, Ukraine, Micki’s goal brought some warmth to the travelling fans, as he nutmegged a defender before coolly sliding the ball into the net. And that was just a sign of things to come from our midfield Armenian…

5. Henrikh Mkhitaryan v Sunderland, Old Trafford, 26/12/16

There’s nothing quite like football on Boxing Day and, this year, Mkhitaryan served up a Christmas treat that will live long in the memory of every United fan. As Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s cross came into the box, its flight path meant it was behind the midfielder, but what followed was a spectacular piece of improvisation as Mkhitaryan backheeled the ball beyond Jordan Pickford. All hail the scorpion king!

6. Wayne Rooney v Stoke City, bet365 Stadium, 21/01/17

Saturday 21 January. Stoke 1 United 0. 94 minutes on the clock. Step up, Wayne Rooney, coming off the bench to curl a stunning free-kick into the corner, rescue a precious point and become the Reds’ all-time top scorer in the process. It’s a goal that we’ll be seeing beyond this poll for years to come. Rooney told MUTV after the game: “It’s a proud moment for me and a huge honour to get that record. It’s about a career and I still feel there’s a lot more to come, but overall it’s a really proud moment for me.”

7. Henrikh Mkhitaryan v Wigan Athletic, Old Trafford, 29/01/17

Up next, we’ve got a classic counter-attack from the Reds, started and finished by Mkhitaryan. United were 2-0 up and cruising in this FA Cup fourth-round tie, but don’t let that take anything away from the quality of the third goal. The midfielder ran onto Rooney’s flick and powered through the Wigan half, exchanging passes with Anthony Martial before tapping home. Talk about easy on the eye!

8. Henrikh Mkhitaryan v Leicester City, King Power Stadium, 06/02/17

Fast forward eight days, and there was yet another piece of Micki magic to behold. The third goal at Leicester’s expense to feature on our shortlist, this was all about one man, as Mkhitaryan’s pace proved too much for the Foxes’ defence. Racing past Wes Morgan and into the area, the 28-year-old produced a finish to match his fine run, finding the corner before wheeling away in celebration.

9. Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Southampton, Wembley Stadium, 26/02/17

The Swede has often been described as a man for the big occasion, and he lived up to that billing during February’s EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley. While it was his late header that ultimately won United the trophy, Zlatan set the tone for the dramatic victory with a delightful 30-yard free-kick, taking his goal tally at the time to 25.

10. Jesse Lingard v Middlesbrough, Riverside Stadium, 19/03/17

Last but not least, our final contender is Lingard’s stunning drive against Middlesbrough back in March. Similar to Mkhitaryan’s goal against Leicester, the winger ran the length of the opposition half, this time opting to pull the trigger from outside the area. The youngster fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner to spark celebrations in the away end, and even provided a memorable one of his own as he mimed playing the flute!
